MAY 11, 2004 MEETING
MINUTES
The second meeting of the Southwest Region Career
Technical Education (CTE) Business-Education Partnership was held May 11, 2004
at Jay M. Robinson High School, Concord.
John Metcalf presided at the meeting. In attendance were: John Metcalf, Greg
Gift, Harold Winkler, Liz Poole, Alan King, Eric Leazer, Emily Behm, Curt
Lorimer, Jan Jordan, Linda James, Dexter Stultz, John Lattimore, Grover Stewart,
Scott Cuykendall, Bob Wright, Bonnie Renfro, David Hollars, Tim Eldridge, John
Blair.
- John opened the meeting reviewing the
agenda and objectives (To learn more about the Career Technical Education
program and to continue to develop a strategic plan for CTE in the southwest
Region).
- Greg provided overview materials on Career
Technical Education inclusive of: The CTE Standard Course of Study, Building
Career Pathways document, Numbers Report, Employers Evaluate CTE Graduates
report and the NC Course of Study Graduation
Requirements.
- Students representing CTE from Jay M
Robinson High Schools served as a panel describing their experiences in CTE
programs and answering questions from the partnership
members.
- Students and teachers conducted tours of
the Robinson High School CTE programs.
Each partnership member was able to see two-three CTE labs interviewing
students and teachers as they toured.
- After the panel and tours partnership
members were asked their impressions of what they saw and
heard:
Teacher quality impressive, students engaged and excited,
strong board and administrative support, students motivated, enthusiasm for CTE
radiates, variety of teaching methodology demonstrated, students insightful,
strong community buy in, success breeds success, CTE not in isolation of core
academics, CTE has enriched students total educational experience, CTE provides
both academic and technical skill development, teachers share interest and
vision, instructors have experience in business and industry and use that
experience to enrich their teaching..
- John asked the group to write down one
action item that we as a partnership can ‘do’. The attached list “Partnership
To Do’s” captures what individual partners wrote.
- The next meeting will be 8:30am-11:00am,
